Miles isn't particularly happy with him, but Bass points out he's just finishing what Miles started when he brought Rachel here. That has proven to be a spectacular failure. Ben's more reasonable. Or, well, more attached to their kids, more willing to bargain.

Also...more history with Bass and Miles's actual blood.

He was hoping that would prove far more fruitful than the woman scorned act.

He'd watched them being escorted in, knew they'd been taken to the house he'd prepared for them. No cage or dungeon or anything so crass. Ben was brother to the General, childhood friend of the President, after all. Bass had a nice house prepared, well-stocked, all the amenities of the city, a housekeeper even.

If there were guards patrolling and on duty at it? Well, they were the family of the General, which made them potential targets for those looking to hurt Miles, didn't it? Protection was a given. Bass couldn't have them getting lost.

He'd meant to give them more time to settle in, but while he was watching...he'd seen her. Not well enough to discern every change, but certainly well enough to see she'd grown up. So, he'd asked Miles to go get her, bring her for dinner. Miles had snarled and Bass had asked him just what sort of a monster he thought he was, giving him his best wounded expression, and, in the end, he'd won.

He'd had dinner laid out in the library, a table by the fireplace to ward off winter's chill. Only the best--steak and fresh vegetables, a bottle of really nice wine, a decadent dessert. That had all made Miles snarl a little bit more, especially given dinner was only set for two, but Bass promised his intentions were nothing but honorable.

...If he had the guards outside Rachel's cell joking about far less honorable things the President was probably doing to "the Matheson girl" and taking bets on the likely state she'd be in after "dinner"? Served the bitch right for refusing to tell him anything and believing the worst about him.

Like he'd ever do anything to alienate Miles that far? Maybe she didn't remember how fond he'd been of the little girl Charlotte had been before her parents destroyed the world, but he did. And he wanted to see the woman she'd become. That was all. Really.

If he was actually a little nervous as he poured a couple of glasses of wine in anticipation of her arrival? Well, there wasn't anyone here to see.
