In the end, he only gets Andie to Hogsmeade by promising he's just interviewing for the job, not accepting it outright. It's not that he doesn't understand her reservations--he does. She doesn't spend enough time with the --muggles, he reminds himself, they're called muggles here--or out in their world. Why would she, given how it treats people like her, even in her beloved New Orleans. It would be better up north, anyway, she points out, trying to convince him to apply for a job at her beloved Ilvermorny. They met there, after all. Why not go back? Because there is still a fucking Puritanical strain there that says it's a bad influence on the students if they live together without being married, and if they marry, they can't go back home, even just within their own world, which makes no sense to him. Something something about living in harmony, and with he remembers, even if she doesn't, that being up north only protected he so much as a teenager. Granted, the wizarding world are more concerned about different "impurities" in the blood that her magical skill should allay, but it doesn't. She's not a pureblood witch, and she's not white and that fucks them over in both worlds. Either way, the boys are still considered bastards; he can't even legally acknowledge them in the muggle world without repercussions.

At the moment, high on the morphine, Bass truly didn't remember what he'd said last night, or this morning, or why he had texted Alex, but not Miles. In fact, it seemed downright weird that he wouldn't have sent the text to both of them. He frowned a little, confused, but leaned happily into Alex's touch as his fingers ran through Bass's curls.
"Didn't I?" Another little frown, and then it cleared. "Oh! They took my phone. I texted you and we were talking, and then they took my phone before I could text Miles. They won't let me call anyone in here. Just the person who I wanted to come get me, and that was you."
As proof, he pointed at the sign on the wall that said "No Cellphone Use."
Since he didn't fully remember why he was upset with Miles, beyond a twisted up feeling in his stomach, he shrugged easily. "I'll text him when we get to your car. That way he won't worry." Not that he probably would worry, and where that thought came from made him all uneasy, so he pushed back from it, fast.
"Can we go now? I forgot to ask you to bring clothes, but the nurse said she'd get me some sweatpants, if you didn't. They had to cut off my jeans, which was just...rude. I liked those jeans." Not that he'd have ever gotten the bloodstains out of them, anyway.

For the first time since the morning after the night he and Charlie struck their deal, Miles was in Independence Hall. Bass had just told Charlie how, no, he did not want Miles to move back in to his room, even if that meant she moved out of it and into his. She'd still made the move, and Miles' room sat empty once more. He wondered, idly, how much of Miles' things were still there, what the other man had thought the one night he'd stayed in it before the disastrous breakfast the next morning when Bass had thrown him out and told him to never come back.
Now he was back. Bass supposed he could have gone to him, but here, in his office, he had some protection--not physical, not the guards, but in knowing who he was. Maybe he didn't like that person much, knew Miles had to hate him, given what he'd done, what Miles probably thought he was still doing to Charlie, not knowing things really had changed. But the knowing, the certainty...he could hold on to the President and General to keep himself together through this, surely. Right? Right.
Bass downed the whiskey he'd poured himself, then poured another. A knock at the door signaled the guard coming back with Miles' beer. Bass handed it over to the man he'd built his life around, then retreated a safe distance away.
"So. You're here. What shall we talk about?"

As the drugs wore off, Bass wasn't sure he hadn't imagined it all, except he was clean and had clean clothes and Miles was...well, he was still Miles, but he seemed more like the Miles Bass has loved than the cold stranger that took his place, so he probably didn't imagine it, right? He was more sure when Miles told him his kid was in Mexico and agreed to take him there, no more delays. Of course, then men got themselves lit on fire and Miles collapsed, and shit went sideways, and Bass wanted to kill Rachel for hanging all over Miles like he was hers, but he bit it back and managed to keep his comments to himself, even if he got a bit sulky, earning him a few arched eyebrows from Charlie, but by the time Miles was better, Bass had it under control, mostly.
Not so well that Charlie wasn't insisting on coming with them to Mexico, which Bass didn't have much problem with, except for the part where he'd been hoping for actual time alone with Miles, hoping to figure something out and, ultimately, to be allowed to be a bit of a nervous wreck over the whole finding his kid thing which he coudln't be in front of Charlie. That had him a little jittery and on edge, but leaving Rachel behind and his clear certainty that finding his kid was somehow going to put a bunch of things right (don't ask him to explain how) made him a little bit more cheerful by the time they were a few miles out of Willoughby.

Post "Dead Man Walking" Open Post
May. 1st, 2017 09:04 pm[If anyone wants a super-high, just came face-to-face to his mortality, and his worst memories and stuff, but now is all...y'know. High.]
The world kept coming in and out of focus, sound surging, rushing loud through his ears, every stupid step a spider took up the wall scratching inside his head. Then it retreated, and nothing was left, like what he'd expected, everything cold and distant and dark. A few heartbeats--or hours--and his skin warmed back up and he felt like he was floating on a cloud, sounds muted like when he and Miles used to snuggle under the blankets with a flashlight and comic books when they were supposed to be sleeping.
That memory made him smile a little, aided by the fact that he could hear Miles' voice. Maybe he was dead, because Miles sounded worried, and Miles wouldn't worry about him now. Charlotte, now...Charlotte had looked almost sad, which was probably ridiculous. She'd wanted him dead. They all did, and now they got their wish, and he was okay with that, except for the fact he wasn't burning, and shouldn't he be burning? And if not burning, then he should be...nothing, but he wasn't nothing, he was on a roller coaster and pretty sure he was going to be sick, but roller coasters had gone away with everything else and he'd never been sick on a ride a day in his life.
Maybe it was Hell, after all.
Rachel's voice, exasperated, before she tried to drown him by making him drink something convinced him that he was right. He was in Hell. That was okay, then. Except, really, he'd prefer burning to having to spend eternity with Rachel, but probably if he'd prefer it, then it wouldn't be Hell, and so, it made sense that she was here. Who else would be? And Miles' voice, far away, upset, like some tease of home, before retreating...well, yeah. Miles, there, but always out of reach. Seemed about right.
Charlie's voice was harder to reconcile, but then he was gone again, and when he was aware of things once again, he actually felt like his brain was trying to push through something impossible, but Miles was...calling his name. The light was too bright, but Miles was there, and...smiling. Clearly Bass was hallucinating. Could he stand? No. He was dead. Honestly, Miles. Stop being demanding when he's dead. Except he's still smiling, and maybe Bass isn't dead? Except he should be dead.
But Miles looks so happy, and Bass has missed that, and he mutters something inane, smiling back, and Miles almost laughs, and Charlie--Charlie's behind him and smiling, too, and maybe the priests were right that even last minute remorse and asking for forgiveness is enough to get it, and he's in heaven after all. But that can't be right, either, because he never found his son, and he can't die before he finds him, makes up for...he doesn't know, but Emma died and he needs to tell the kid, to see if there's anything Bass can do for him, to do something good in this world. It seems unlikely, and Miles still doesn't tell him, so not heaven after all, or even Heaven!Miles is also a dick who wants to keep his kid from him, even when he's smiling like he cares if Bass is dead or alive, and, really, all of it's just a little too much, and he's back on the roller coaster, feeling sick. He mutters something about there not being flames, that he would've preferred flames to roller coasters and Rachel, and then the blessed darkness comes again, as he passes back out mid-sentence.

Convincing Ben to let him take Charlie out on a scouting trip was easy enough. Ben was kind of oblivious. Convincing Miles was a bit more difficult, but a mention of Bobby and the abandoned house and two other girls and her restlessness, along with absolutely no reminder that she was technically an adult now (he wasn't an idiot), did the trick. He avoided Rachel like the plague. Let Ben and Miles tell her.
The fact that he had completely good intentions in keeping her away from Bobby-the-idiot (who probably was an angel compared to him and Miles at his age, but he was never admitting that) gave his arguments the weight of virtue, even to himself. The fact that he was, really, older than her father, and she was, surely, over her crush on him by now, cemented that. She'd called him "old," after all.
He had, in no way, implied that she'd do far better to look toward someone with more experience than Bobby to show her just what bodies were capable of doing together. Really.
...He was so going to the special hell.
By the time he cleared the way and grabbed the promised bottle of tequila and the things they'd need for the caves themselves, he was mostly sober again and that one thought just echoed. Special hell. Miles' look that threatened slow disembowelment should anything untoward happen to his niece had the back of Bass's neck itching as he moved to the gates to meet her. (He did not take any glee in telling Bobby he'd be short one party on his house exploring trip--that likely wouldn't happen at all now that Bass had told Miles the plan. No glee at all).
He was leaning against the gate, waiting for her, knife and sword at his hip, rifle slung over his shoulder, but straightened when she arrived, flashing her a smile as he caught the pack. "You sure you got everything?"

He'd gone back to let Connor and Tom out (with a bullet ready for Tom) only to find them gone. His kid in the wind wasn't what he needed, at all, but there were bigger concerns at the moment, like kicking the residual Patriots asses.
( They'd won. At least kinda. )
( They'd won. At least kinda. )
Miles isn't particularly happy with him, but Bass points out he's just finishing what Miles started when he brought Rachel here. That has proven to be a spectacular failure. Ben's more reasonable. Or, well, more attached to their kids, more willing to bargain.
Also...more history with Bass and Miles's actual blood.
He was hoping that would prove far more fruitful than the woman scorned act.
He'd watched them being escorted in, knew they'd been taken to the house he'd prepared for them. No cage or dungeon or anything so crass. Ben was brother to the General, childhood friend of the President, after all. Bass had a nice house prepared, well-stocked, all the amenities of the city, a housekeeper even.
If there were guards patrolling and on duty at it? Well, they were the family of the General, which made them potential targets for those looking to hurt Miles, didn't it? Protection was a given. Bass couldn't have them getting lost.
He'd meant to give them more time to settle in, but while he was watching...he'd seen her. Not well enough to discern every change, but certainly well enough to see she'd grown up. So, he'd asked Miles to go get her, bring her for dinner. Miles had snarled and Bass had asked him just what sort of a monster he thought he was, giving him his best wounded expression, and, in the end, he'd won.
He'd had dinner laid out in the library, a table by the fireplace to ward off winter's chill. Only the best--steak and fresh vegetables, a bottle of really nice wine, a decadent dessert. That had all made Miles snarl a little bit more, especially given dinner was only set for two, but Bass promised his intentions were nothing but honorable.
...If he had the guards outside Rachel's cell joking about far less honorable things the President was probably doing to "the Matheson girl" and taking bets on the likely state she'd be in after "dinner"? Served the bitch right for refusing to tell him anything and believing the worst about him.
Like he'd ever do anything to alienate Miles that far? Maybe she didn't remember how fond he'd been of the little girl Charlotte had been before her parents destroyed the world, but he did. And he wanted to see the woman she'd become. That was all. Really.
If he was actually a little nervous as he poured a couple of glasses of wine in anticipation of her arrival? Well, there wasn't anyone here to see.

[OOC] Revoluton Timeline
Jan. 28th, 2014 05:26 pmHow I came up with it:
1982 - 2027 are taken from Revolution Wiki, drawn from official sources, with the exception of Connor and Emma. Given there are NO official sources of info on that timeline, I've done what I can to make it make sense. Emma says something about them sending troops into combat, which would make it seem more like 2001, post 9/11, EXCEPT--she and Bass are also talking about scholarships and going off to basic in a few WEEKS while she goes to school, none of which would make sense post-September (they wouldn't know about scholarships yet, if that was their senior year PLUS they'd be 20 years old, headed to college at 21, and while a lot of them do that, not many 21 year olds end up with full academic scholarships). Add in her parents not ~allowing~ Emma to tell the boys, and that makes it seem she definitely was younger, not a 21 year old out on her own, going back to school after a few years out. So, I've made a command decision it was the Kosovo War troops were being sent into that she's talking about. It was small on the scale of wars 1990-2005, for U.S. involvement, but spring of 99 there was a ton of bombing going on that would worry an 18-year-old sending her boyfriend(s) off into it. If anyone has a better explanation, I'm all ears.*
*Note: For RP purposes, I often shift it a bit later, having Miles and Bass born in 1983/84 instead of 81/82, which would put them graduating from high school in 2002, and thus Emma's worry about them sending troops in to combat would be gearing up for stuff post-9/11, which makes WAY more sense in the grand scheme of that episode/their lives.
2027/2028 are logical extrapolation, but not hard and fast or from any official source, and totally up for debate. It's what works for me, though. I derived that timeline by tracing the route they traveled, getting the distances, dividing by an average of 20 miles/day which is the average for both walkers across the continent & what the wagon trains averaged, as well. I allowed for 30 miles a day on trips where we know they were on horseback (with no wagon to pull), and then padded it with time for them to actually do the stuff they did, since it's not like they were just walking and sleeping and nothing else. :-)
The October 2028 date is pretty firm, as evidenced by the kids trick-or-treating in Willoughby when Miles and Rachel are wtf-ing at the Patriot's arrival.
Given the complete lack of seasonal change while they've been running all around the continent, it's kind of hard to completely justify any of this, but they had to have gone through winter at some point, and with how I worked it out, that was when they were most at war, which happened off screen.
